Group Therapy for Back pain

Group Therapy for Back painA new study shows that group therapy that presents a new cost-effective solution that aids the treatment of lower back pain.

The trial study published in Lancet showed that after six one and a half hour therapy groups the participants were still showing their improved results up to a year later.

701 patients were involved in the study and each was given advice that included staying out of bed, remaining active, and taking pain meds.

From this point forward, a control group continued on without intervention and another 486 participants were put through the six sessions of CBT or cognitive behavioral therapy in group sessions of eight patients.  They also were given individual assessments before the therapy began.

Throughout the group therapy patients were led through guided discussions about relaxation techniques, physical activity, and how to overcome negative thoughts.

Afterwards, those that went through therapy scored better on surveys about disability and pain and were overall more positive about dealing with lower back pain in their lives.

The price of the group treatment was a cost-effective solution given the fact it was only priced at £187 for the six sessions.

University of Warwick Professor Sarah Lamb the study leader stated that the results of the advice alone added in with the behavioral intervention showed that most people benefited from the treatment process.
