There are a number of causes to back pain which include; muscle strains, ligament sprains, disc problems, suffered injury or disease. Chronic back pain is common among the elderly although there are cases of young people suffering from the condition. A major cause of the chronic back pain is in the sedentary nature and lifestyle of most people.

The first form of therapy employed is preventive therapy which works against making the condition worse. The second phase involves releasing muscle spasms on the lower back that are responsible for chronic pain. These muscles are relaxed so that normal functions of the spinal chord are regained. This involves restoring functions of the spine, movement and mobility so that the spinal structure is balanced.

Once this is achieved, a patient is able move easily and it helps promoting overall well being. Remedial massage therapy is safe and effective in relieving lower back pain. This should be followed by change in lifestyle and relaxation techniques. The patient is encouraged to maintain correct body posture and learn stress coping mechanism to ensure lasting results.
