Treatments available for back pains differ from one person to another. One type of treatment involves use of topical preparations to ease the pain. These drugs are available in form of creams or sprays. They are applied directly on the skin and work on nerve ending to alter sensation and help to reduce inflammation and swelling in the problem spot. Do not use on broken or wounded skin, similarly avoid use on rashes or if a person suffers from asthma.

Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs are used to treat lower back pains; they work by reducing the effect of chemicals responsible for inflammation and swelling in the painful spot. They are available as oral drugs; they are effective in relieving pain in the lower back and muscular sprains. Do not exceed recommended dose and consult a doctor before using the drug if you are asthmatic.

Opioid and opiates fall under narcotics and are useful in relieving intense and severe painful episodes of back aches. They are available as prescription medicine. Caution should be exercised as they can be addictive and chances of developing dependency on narcotics are high. They interfere with pain messages and alter the sensation of pain which is useful in relieving the problem.

Muscle relaxants work by reducing pain in muscles and nervous system. They are effective when combined with anti-inflammatory drugs. Taking these drugs can be used to improve mobility. They are known to cause side effects such as drowsiness; it is advisable to take medication before going to bed.

Paracetamol is highly used as treatment for pain because of its safety and minimal cause for side effects. The likelihood of becoming addicted or dependent on the drug is highly reduced. The drug is kind to the gastrointestinal tract and has reduced rates of allergies. Paracetamols affect pain reception in the brain which then alters how pain is perceived. The drug is readily available as an over the counter medication and it is effective in treating mild and moderate cases of back pain.
