Medication For Back Pain

medication-for-back-painBack pain is associated with intense aches that can go on over a long period of time; this makes it imperative for patients to get a suitable form of relief. Use of medication is one method used to ease discomfort associated with the chronic back pain. However, there is the risk of patients developing dependence on drugs which can result to a form of abuse.

Patients suffering from back aches need to exercise caution when using drugs to treat the condition. Due to constant intake of drugs over a long period of time in the case of chronic back aches, there are records of patients getting addicted to drugs such as OxcyContin, Vicodin, and Percocet. It is advisable for patients to use medication as recommended by physicians.

In treatment of chronic conditions associated with great pain and discomfort, there is need to strike a balance between effectively relieving pain and ensuring patients don’t develop dependency on medications. Reports indicate that a majority of chronic pain is under treated and opioid painkillers are underutilized. But there was an increase in misuse and abuse of these drugs where they were prescribed.

Opioid painkillers are effective in relieving chronic back ache symptoms but they pose serious problems to patients when used in the wrong way. This is the reason why the drug is not highly recommended; and there are patients who opt for other methods of treatment instead of taking opioid drugs.

Opioid painkillers are recommended as short term solution. Upon getting relief patients are advised to switch to less addictive medication such as non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and Tylenol. These are available as over the counter medications. In cases where patients suffer from arthritis or back injuries that cannot be corrected by surgery opioid pain killers are often recommended as a long term solution.
