use-of-over-the-counter-medication-in-treating-back-painOver the counter medication are medications that can be bought in drug stores or supermarkets without a doctor authorization. They are classified in two groups; non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs where drugs such as Advil fall in this category, and acetaminophen or Tylenol. These types of drugs are useful in treating back pain as they reduce pain and inflammation associated with the condition.

There is no single over the counter medication applicable in treating back pain for all patients; they work differently in each person. Patients are advised to try on different drugs to find out what works best for their condition. In the case of Tylenol, it is useful in relieving symptoms of pain but doesn’t eliminate inflammation. All forms of over the counter medication have benefits and side effects; it is advisable to thoroughly research on each drug before using it.

Tylenol is commonly used for back pains; the active ingredient is acetaminophen. This compound is categorized as an analgesic. In addition to relieving pains and aches, it can be used to treat high fever. Acetaminophen is found in pain reliever drugs such as Excedrin, Vanquish, and Aspirin-Free Anacin. This compound is also available in generic form in combination with other drugs.

Tylenol can be used to bring short time relief for mild and moderate back pains. It affects the central nervous system where it reduces the amount of chemicals responsible for pain excitation. The drug is available in form of tablets, capsules, liquids, or drops. It is possible to take Tylenol with or without food. Side effects associated with Tylenol are increased when taken with alcohol; this might cause liver failure. Patients with liver problems should consult with a doctor before using the drug. Similarly, patients should avoid alcohol when on this medication.
