This is because surgical options typically are not effective and medications have many adverse side effects.

This condition causes a large number of back pain issues and is fairly common. The majority of these types of cases come from disc damage and the result is typically pain in the legs, numbness, and even sciatica. There were eighty four adults split up into 3 different groups who were all suffering from back pain for a period of under six months tested by a group of researchers.

The testing involved providing the people with etanercept, which is a medication for arthritis, a placebo saline solution, and steroids. These were all given with injections at intervals of a couple of weeks apart. All three of the groups of people claimed that the pain in their back decreased although statistically there were no differences between them.

A fellow by the name of Dr. Steven P. Cohen who was the lead author on the test seemed a bit disappointed with the results of the test, and stated that in the future he hopes the drug etanercept is proven effective for treating this type of pain. He summarised that for now, “the most relief for back pain is attained from exercise.” This comes from a study that the Annals of Internal Medicine published.

The majority of adults living within the US are going to at some point in their lives likely experience some sort of severe back pain.

For some of these sufferers, the symptoms of the pain will continue for an extended period of time. For the ones who are more fortunate however, it will be something that quickly passes.

Over the course of a year, there can be a million plus individuals that go in for back surgery as an attempt to fix the issue, and around ¼ for those people end up having their spinal column fused. The cause for such a fusion is such things as herniated discs or other types of injuries associated with the disc.

The procedure entails the bonding of the vertebrae in a way the keeps them from moving. Surgeons will commonly use such things as screws and metal rods to perform this procedure. According to Dr. Kevin Puaza however, who is the individual that founded the Texas Spine and Joint Hospital, this is not a good answer for the majority of patients.

Dr. Puaza has come up with a procedure that is much easier on the body and only takes about 5 min. to perform. In this procedure, the doctor provides a local to the area, and them injects two types of blood plasma which combine with each other becoming a substance known as fibrin. This is a substance that works its way into the spine and fills in the cracks that may be present allowing for the disc to regrow itself.

Within Dr. Puaza’s private practice, there have been over 1000 patients treated and the success rate is been close to 90%. It is hoped by the year 2015 that this method is going to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration which will make it available to the general public.

There is a company named BioRestorative Therapies, Incorporated, located in Jupiter Florida that has made an announcement within the last week concerning an improved version of a device to deliver stem cells within discs that are herniated and bulging. The CEO of the company, Mark Weinreb, said “It is the goal of the company to relieve the pain which people suffering from back injuries endure through these technological advances after all the necessary approvals have been gained’.

Many conditions like spinal stenosis, fracture, scoliosis, and degenerative disc disease, are often treated with spinal fusion according to the American Academy of orthopedic surgeons. Spinal surgery is only recommended when a doctor has a clear view of exactly what is causing the pain.

Since institutions like the Mayo Clinic proclaim that only a small percentage of people who suffer from back pain need surgery, and majority of the problems can be handled through treatments that are nonsurgical nature. These will include things like massage, heat, ice, physical therapy, and even anti-inflammatory medication.

A new trial, to be run by the University of York, with funding of over £700,000 from Arthritis Research UK, is searching for people with severe neck pain in the York area.

The trial, to last a year, is studying the effectiveness of the Alexander Technique and acupuncture. The Complimentary Medicine Research Group at the University is running the trial along with the York Trials Unit and recruiting up to 500 patients in Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield, as well as York.

In the adult population, severe neck pain is a common complaint. It is a painful and disabling condition, and often very costly to the NHS, as well as to the patient, their families and society in general.

The most effective care for this type of problem has, as yet, not been discovered and this trial aims to discover the effectiveness of the alternative therapies, to be used in conjunction with traditional GP care.

Patients will be split into three randomly selected groups. Each group will continue to receive GP treatment, one group will also receive 20 Alexander technique lessons; another group will receive 12 acupuncture sessions; whilst the third group will receive only the GP care.

A Senior Research Fellow in the University of York’s Department of Health Sciences, Dr. Hugh MacPherson, will lead the ATLAS trial. He is reported to have said: “Our research will provide data which will help patients, practitioners, providers and policy-makers make informed choices about care.

If the evidence from the new trial justifies it, then both interventions should be offered routinely as referral options to patients within the NHS, which would mean that patients would no longer have to pay for these interventions themselves.”

It has been revealed today that the amount of money that is spent by the various trusts across the capital varies greatly. Several hospitals have already cut their spending on such disorders as arthritis, repetitive strain injury and severe back pain and where you lives makes a huge difference on the quality of care you receive.

Bottom of the league in London for spending is Ealing primary care, and this is also the third lowest in the nation. They spent an average of £289 per patient in 2009-2010. Camden is top of league, spending £712 per patient on average. Hammersmith and Fulham increased their expenditure by 170% to £639, whilst NHS Barnet decreased their spending by 41% and now only spent £385 per patient.

These findings have been published by the charity Arthritis and Muscoskeletal Alliance, who have also warned that care provisions are getting worse, despite the latest guidance from the Department of Health. They are also accusing PCTs of ignoring these new guidelines that are aimed at assessing the needs of patients within the local vicinity.

The chairman of ARMA, Prof. David Marsh, has said that urgent action is needed to address the variations that exist in the service provision. Muscoskeletal conditions currently affect around 9.6m people in England alone, and their cost to the NHS was £4.76bn in 2009-10, more than diabetes, infectious diseases and respiratory conditions.

Thermobalancing is a new type of technology that is thought to be able to reduce the amount of pain people have in their back.

It is known that this technology works by reducing the amount of information in the back which can allow tissues to be repaired. The effect of this treatment is something that lasts for a long time as it has a cumulative effect.

The device has been created by Dr Allen and it is particularly targeted towards people who suffer from chronic lower back pain. Low back pain is typically caused by conditions such as disc disease arthritis, which is degenerative.

Back pain is a very common medical condition and it is estimated that around 80 percent of people will suffer from this problem at some point during their life. This sort of back pain can range dramatically in its type, it can be everything from an ache, to a sharp pain.

Back pain that is regarded as chronic is something that has continued for three months or more. The therapeutic effects from this device are thought to be able to improve the amount of blood flow in the nerves and tissues in the lower back. This is something that can reduce inflammation and also swelling.

By reducing the swelling, there is less pressure put on nerves in the back, which is the most common source of back pain. The device is something that is very easy to wear when you are going about your normal activities so it will not feel like an intrusion.

Dr Allen has commented about his device, “This device targets the most affected areas of the lower back and is effective in treating pain. It is a long lasting effect that builds up over time. It is a way for people to reduce the lower back pain they feel without the need for an operation or painkillers which can have significant side effects.”

One of his researches has shown that one third out of all individuals that were studied on the basis of their gripping and unidentifiable back pain actually developed severe back pain which heavily affected their everyday lives.

Special tests usually didn’t show any apparent signs or evidence of their everyday back pain, yet people needed extended sick leaves and sought doctors help.

Western Australia quotes Melloh explaining the difference: “Each one of us feels lower back or neck pain now and then however, this research focuses on individuals with this gripping and un-identifiable pain that doesn’t stop for longer periods of time, thus causing severe consequences in social and economic aspect of peoples lives.”

A group of 315 individuals that sought doctors help because of the stabbing back pain that they couldn’t specify was selected for this research. They were all interviewed and these interviews were repeated again after 3, 6 and 12 weeks, and then again after a further 6 months.

Part of the research assessments were also questions about peoples attitudes. Only 169 people remained to see the project finished, and approximately 30% of them were estimated to have an enduring medical situation.

Melloh comments:”When people start using sick leaves and staying at home it is hard to get back to that daily routine of work and usually pains increase as well. This is an endless circle that has to be stopped.”

A recent study has suggested that the injection of arthritis drugs or steroids directly into the spine might be a much more effective way of treating back pain and leg pain in people that are suffering because they have nerve damage.

This was something that was not previously done so much because there were risks of complications and doctors feared the drug interactions would be a problem. However this study has found that most of the safety concerns are unnecessary.

The researchers found that injecting traditional anti-arthritis drugs directly into the spine did a better job of easing the pain that these patients felt. This pain is notoriously hard to treat and this new method of treatment could bring pain relief to a large number of people suffering from the condition. The study also found that giving patients injections on an as needed basis, rather than at set intervals, could be a more effective way of treating them.

A researcher on the study was Dr Stephen Cohen who is based at John Hopkins University in the United States. He has commented, “Chronic back pain is a type of condition that is known to be very difficult to treat. Unfortunately there is no treatment that is known to work in all patients and so the study is a great step forward in finding a more effective way of bringing relief to the huge number of people who suffer from this condition around the world.”

Most of these pain conditions are caused because people have nerve damage in the legs or back. If medication doesn’t work, surgery is often another option that this is a much more extreme measure. It is also the case that once the surgery has been completed, the back pain relief is only temporary, and years later the pain may return, and will eventually return to the same level it was at before, or worse.

Dr Cohan continued, “People are looking for a method of treatment it is more effective than the current drug options and less risky than surgery. Unfortunately the treatment options right now are not good enough but this new method could be something that could bring hope to a great many people.”

Despite the promising idea of combining these two drugs together, which the study proved was safe, the actual effectiveness of the treatment is not so great. Many patients found that the treatment was not actually more effective in their individual cases.

It was initially thought that the injection of an anti-inflammatory drug, Etanercept, directly into the spine was going to be a more effective way of treating the chronic back pain that people experience because of nerve damage in their back and legs.

This steroid, which is specifically genetically engineered, would be injected to the spine and it was thought that it would be a more effective treatment for this condition which is known to be very difficult for physicians treat.

The study has been led by Dr Stephen Cohen who is based out of John Hopkins University in Baltimore. In a comment to the press he stated, “For a long time we’ve been looking for effective way to treat this condition. Currently steroids are injected directly into the spine, instead of this anti-inflammatory drug, and unfortunately the effectiveness of the treatment is not uniform in all patients. While some people benefit from this new sort of treatment, others do not.”

The new drug which is being injected as part of the study is currently used to treat autoimmune disorders and rheumatoid arthritis. It is used to treat people who are suffering from a condition where their immune system attacks their own body which can cause pain and swelling as tissue is damaged.

This drug works by blocking a substance that has produced by the body that causes inflammation. Steroids are the previous treatments and they are capable of preventing inflammation in the body in general but this new type of treatment is much more specific. The idea is that it will bind to nerve cell receptors in the specific areas where it is injected and theoretically these will prevent any sort of pain in the patient.

Dr Cohen continued, “This study administered the drug to people in a level which we knew was safe. It is possible it could be injected at higher quantities but we’re not sure whether this would be a safe option for patients just yet. We also found that in the quantities we injected it was not as effective a treatment as use of steroids.”

Over 80 patients who suffer the condition were involved with the study which was conducted on a double-blind basis. Over six months patients received injections of a steroid while others received a placebo. The idea behind giving the injection at the site of the pain was thought to mean that there would-be fewer side-effects in patients as compared to when drugs are injected intravenously or taken orally.

In the study it was found that the patients who remained on their previous steroid regime of treatment experienced less pain. The patients who were put on the new form of treatment had a greater amount of back pain showing it not to be as effective.

With full time employees in the UK working longer hours than the European Union average* it’s little wonder many people suffer from stress and tension.

When you add in commuting times and things like trying to juggle work and family life, you often get a vicious cycle of stress and tension that’s hard to escape.

Below we’ll look at some ways people can alleviate these symptoms and feel more relaxed both at work and when they return home in the evenings, this is essential as stress can cause all manor of other health issues including back pain and high blood pressure

Massagers

There are many massage devices you can buy to ease your tense muscles. The Homedics Shiatsu Massager is a real treat for your feet, and perfect for those who’ve been standing all day, or had to walk long distances in the course of their work.

The Homedics Quad Massager is a handy size for rolling over your neck and shoulders if they’ve become tight and sore from too much stress and tension throughout your working day.

Gentle exercise

If you work in an office all day in front of a computer, it’s easy for you to get into a habit of sitting in an awkward position. Taking some gentle exercise such as a short walk on the way to work, at lunchtime or on your way home can help relieve some of the strain.

Altered eating habits

Lots of people in the UK are prone to emotional eating. For example, when they’re feeling stressed they might turn to fatty foods and chocolate for a quick fix to make them feel better.

The types of food we eat as well as what we drink can have an impact on mood and stress levels. Drinking more water and eating fresh produce can make you feel better and more able to cope with the demands of your job/busy life.

Alternative therapies

As well as things such as the Homedics Shiatsu Massager, you might want to try alternative therapies to ease any stress and tension. Reflexology, hypnotherapy and aromatherapy are just three of the alternative therapies you might consider.

Summary

The things listed above may not help if there’s one particular issue or problem causing you to be stressed or uptight at work. However, if you’re generally feeling tense without being able to pinpoint any one cause, doing as many of the above as possible should help you break the stress/tension cycle.

Ironically enough, smart phones can help with pain that is severe and literally zaps the pain away. When people have this kind of back pain usually it’s so chronic and it can affect many things in their life.

One person with chronic pain is Justin Carriere. It felt like shockwaves going up his back. He said that he always had to stand up and felt very uncomfortable with sitting. His work and ambition in life really suffered because of the back pain.

Carriere was able to try out the neurostimulator that was approved by the FDA to help zap away the back pain. In the 80’s the neurostimulators actually had electrodes and those were controlled by the battery pack. The battery pack helped because the spinal cord would receive stimulation and pain signals would stop before it reached the brain.

Dr. Suelanna Do Ouro from the Beth Israel Medical Centre recently said that the stimulator can be called a smart one. Stimulators now can read when a person moves then it goes on further with figuring out the location of the electricity plus the amount that is sent whenever a person is active.

Carriere was lucky enough to get the smart stimulator and feels better. He can move without having any complications. A few months ago the FDA approved the adaptive stim neurostimulator. Another study was done on people that had used it and around 86% of the people and they almost instant relief
