Treatment Of Herniated Discs

treatment-of-herniated-discsPhysicians will employ a number of methods to diagnose a herniated disc. This includes methods such as physical examinations where sensation is tested, the strength of muscles, and reflexes. An MRI is used in making conclusive diagnosis in addition to physical examination.

After positively identification of a herniated disc; treatment is carried out in a series of stages depending on the severity of the symptoms. The first form of therapy involves rest and modification. The patient is advised to rest and eliminate activities and situations that make the symptoms worse. Avoid strenuous activities during this period. Usually herniated discs return to their original location with time.

Ice and heat application can be used to help in easing the pain associated with a dislocated hernia. This therapy relaxes muscles found around the lower back; use of ice and heat application relieves muscles spasms which work by bringing relief.

Physiotherapy is useful in progressive stages of a hernia disc. This involves lumbar stabilization exercises; although exercises do not directly affect herniated discs this form of therapy is useful in stabilizing lumbar spine muscle. This helps in reducing the pressure experienced by disc and vertebrae.

Anti-inflammatory medications can be used to ease pain in the condition. They work by relieving pressure on compressed nerves. The medication is prescribed by a doctor. Oral steroid medications are useful in acute cases of disc hernia.

Epidural steroid injection is where cortisone is injected directly in the area nerve of compression which is useful in reliving pressure.
