Scoliosis Prognosis

Scoliosis PrognosisThe prognosis of scoliosis depends on the likelihood of progression. The general rules for the progression of large curves have a higher risk of progression than smaller curves, and that thoracic and double primary curves have a higher risk of progression than single lumbar or thora-columbar curves.

In addition, patients who have not reached skeletal maturity have a higher risk of progression (i.e. if the patient has not completed the growth spurt of adolescence).
Genetic Testing for Idiopathic Scoliosis in Adolescents

Through a genome-wide association study, geneticists have identified markers of single nucleotide polymorphisms in DNA that are significantly associated with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.  Fifty-three genetic markers have been identified.  Scoliosis has been described as a biomechanical deformity, progression of which depends on the asymmetrical forces also known as the law of Heuter Volkmann.
